Opera trunks were used in the 19th century by touring opera companies. The decoration was to advertise how fabulous the company was. This box is lacquered wood with hand painted decoration to the front face depicting birds butterflies flowers and a tiger. Circa 1880. Original decorative latch and carrying handles. The box is constructed of a close grained timber, probably Chinese elm or Wotan.
