Opera trunks were used in the 19th century by touring opera companies. The decoration was to help advertise how fabulous the company was. This box is lacquered wood with hand painted floral decoration to the front face. Circa 1880. Original latch. The box is constructed from a close grained wood, probably Wotan or Chinese Elm.
