As is typical of David's seemingly fragile compositions, the three birds are placed in a deliberately complex manner. In the foreground a mother moorhen feeds her well grown chick, whilst in the background a lone blackbird sits atop the rickety garden shed, but also offcentre left. A sense of primitive directness pervades the image and its muted tones tangibly evoke the soft emotion of a grey Cornish day.
